  • Xentum: Firmly Rooted in the Sixth Century…

    • April 14, 2016

Well, who would have thought it? The origins of Xentum date back to the 6th Century… I was updating my LinkedIn profile recently: part of that involved a little research on the concept of a ‘multi-family office.’ That’s not as term widely used in the UK, but it’s very common in the States – and it exactly describes what we do. As part of the description on my profile says: We take a complete overview of your family’s financial plann… Read More

  • The New Xentum Website – and my Thoughts on the Budget

    • March 18, 2016

Well, we live in exciting times. And no, I’m not referring to Wednesday’s Budget. Neither do I mean England’s triumph in the Six Nations, the Cricket World Cup or the news that the Economist Intelligence Unit puts the possibility of President Trump on a par with Jihadi terrorism in its April assessment of global risk. I’m talking about the new Xentum website – which you can find here. Let me start by saying how pleased I am with it, and thanking everyone who worked so hard to design and build it. And as you’ll see, there are two ver… Read More

  • Never say 'Never'

    • March 4, 2016

“We’ve got some cash, Dominic. Just need to park it for a while. Where’s the best place?” In the old days it was simple. I answered with two questions. “No problem. How much do you have?” And then, “Do you need instant access, or can you tie it up for a few months?” Questions answered I’d consult some comparative tables – or later the exciting new world wide web – and make my recommendations. “There’s a good rate with the Yorkshire Building Society, or if you’re prepared to tie it up… Read More

  • Should we Stay or Should we Go?

    • February 19, 2016

I’m writing these notes on Thursday morning, ready for publication on Friday. As I sit at my desk, looking out on a beautiful morning at Moss Wood, David Cameron is heading to Brussels, yet again trying to hammer out a deal with our European partners. He’ll then – if it all goes according to plan – come home to announce the date of the referendum on our continued membership of the EU. Negotiations will start at 5:45 this afternoon and go on into the small hours – with heads of state quite possibly reconvening for an ‘English breakfast&rsq… Read More

  • The Real Cost of Higher Education

    • February 5, 2016

This week has seen another bout of controversy over higher education. David Cameron’s taken time off from his EU re-negotiations and the insults of his backbenchers to lay into our top universities for being ‘discriminatory.’ The Sutton Trust weighed in, criticising ‘labyrinthine admissions systems’ at the top universities. Well, it’s a while until I need to worry about that with Jensen and Darcey. Just the small matter of a few teenage years to negotiate first… But plenty of our clients here at Xentum have been worrying ab… Read More
